Summertime smoothies are such a great crowd pleaser! They are perfect for summer parties and get-togethers, they are healthy and refreshing, and they don't contain alcohol. What you have is a sweet, cool drink that can be enjoyed by anyone of any age in most any setting. Making them right is an artistic endeavor, and what tastes perfect to one person may not taste the same way to the next. So use your artistic license and tweak the drinks to match you and your friends' favorite tastes! Find below some suggestions on what you'll need to make some awesome smoothies and be smoothie master!
Before looking at my suggestions, one of the best recommendations I can make is to tell you to be creative! If there is a certain fruit you like, use it! Do you like pineapple? Try fresh pineapple, canned pineapple with juice, pineapple juice, pineapple yogurt, and other varieties of that flavor. If you like oranges and orange flavored things, you can add fresh orange slices, canned mandarin oranges, orange juice, orange jello mix, tang, orange sherbet, orange kool-aid and so on. Whatever flavor is your favorite, there are so many types of that flavor out there that you can blend together with some ice and other ingredients to make your smoothie incredible. So think about the things you like, make a list of all flavored products you can think of that would enhance that flavor, and go get the ingredients. You'll find yourself creating some of the most fabulous and delicious smoothies ever made!
1. A strong, tough blender.
There are so many blenders out there, so it will be a snap to find one that suits your particular needs. But be sure to get one that is tough, and that will last. Cuisinart and Kitchen Aid have some great blenders. You'll need a blender that does a good job at crushing up ice, frozen fruit and other goodies. Also, you will need a blender that can stand up to repeated usage over a short period of time without overheating. Once you make that first smoothie, the crowd will go wild, and you'll find yourself having to churn out many more on demand, so you and your blender should be prepared!
2. A variety of healthy, yummy ingredients.
Everyone enjoys a different kind of smoothie, so it helps to have a variety of drink ingredients on hand. You have to have ice, of course. Fruits are a must. Bananas, strawberries, blueberries are great starters. Have you thought of adding a can of mandarin oranges or a can of fruit cocktail (with juice) to your smoothie? It is very refreshing. A little applesauce is also a great additive. Shredded coconut is delicious! I also like to add some liquids such as fruit juice, vanilla or regular soy milk, and sometimes even a little strawberry jelly. Buttermilk in very small amounts gives smoothies a wonderful creamy taste. For sweeteners, there is sugar, honey or a little condensed milk. Just remember that moderation is key, and you can always add more of your favorite ingredient, but you can't take away what you have already put in.
3. Big plastic cups, wide straws, stirrers, napkins.
Smoothies are fun to drink, but they can be a little messy sometimes. Wide mouthed plastic cups are great because you can get them in a variety of fun colors, and they are easy to pour the thicker smoothies into. Be sure to pick up some wider straws too. These are nice because then some of the larger pieces of the smoothie ingredients won't clog up your straw, which can be a pain. It's always great to have plenty of napkins on hand–for sticky spills, wrapping the cold cup with, and everything else, plus it is a great way to add a festive touch. Have fun with your smoothie accessories!
Making smoothies is a fun art form that differs in taste with each individual. The best part about making smoothies is getting creative, exploring new recipes, and having fun! It is always a treat to find out the tastes others like, and then concocting something special just for them! If you use healthy ingredients, it can also be a great midday meal replacement on a hot summer's day, when you may not feel like eating much anyway! No matter how you slice it, smoothies are fun, and bring family and friends together! So break out your blender, gather your ingredients, and get to smoothie making!
